All my dwarves have gone on strike... Strange bug?
« on: January 13, 2011, 02:41:03 am »

Running vanilla 31.18, everything's been running smoothly but as of the last siege my dwarves have completely stopped doing anything, and just stand there.

Some random tasks are still being performed (namely buchering animals) but other than that everyone seems to just be milling about.

Several of my military squads are just standing at their last assigned movement point and are "training" there even though they have barracks that they would normally be training at, and have no other orders assigned. (No movement order is currently assigned).

There are four or 5 dwarf corpses outside but the others are making no attempt to recover them, even though no burrows or alerts are currently assigned. They are not forbidden. All labors under the 'o' screen are currently activated. There are prisoners and wounded (from previous battles) in the hospital and the dwarves are no longer bringing them water. I am getting some "doctor cancels apply cast: no water source" alerts even though their water source is still there and was working before the siege started, and there are numerous ponds around the map.

What gives?

Do you have buckets to carry the water? Are there any built coffins or graveyard stockpiles to put the bodies?

That's all I can think of, sorry.

You might have "Ignore refuse from outside" order active.

Are you sure your barracks didn't get toppled by siegers or tantrum throwers?

I've got plenty of buckets and plenty of coffins still left in my graveyard (and yes they are marked for use). My barracks are still functional and dwarves are set to clean refuse from outside.

even though no burrows or alerts are currently assigned.

Kinda sounds like your military has no path back inside, and your civilians have no path to the outside. Check for locked doors, raised drawbridges, fallen cave-in rock, or pesky trees growing in weird spots.

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

Did you mass forbid stuff to keep dwarves from getting murdered when after a sock?

This is what it sounds like to me.  Are your dwarves still in a burrow due to an alert from the siege?  IF there are no jobs inside the burrow except for a few (like the butcher's shop), it could cause this behavior.

Like I said there are no active burrows or alerts... I've even tried multiple times to turn them on and off but there is no change. There are no locked doors or raised bridges.

This is the 11th year this fortress has been running and there have been many sieges, all of which have gone off without a hitch except at the end of this one, when I turned off all the alerts and movement orders, things just... stopped working.

The only thing that might be "blocking" anyone from moving are the huge amounts of goods lying all over the place from sacked caravans and dead bodies. All of these are unforbidden by the way and my dwarves are still idleing instead of collecting the goods (and I have plenty of room left in my stockpiles)...

I should add as I said earlier that several of my military squads are "training" outside of my fortress, at their last assigned movement location. I can tell them to move somewhere else through the 's' menu and they do so, but when I cancel the movement order they just stay there instead of going back to training in their barracks (and yes they are set to 'train' in the schedule, and there barracks are still there and active.............................................ALERT ALERT ALERT

as I was typing that I suddenly realized that I DO IN FACT HAVE LOCKED THEM ALL INSIDE by locking my hatches (which I never do) because they were being ovverrun at the time, and then completely forgot about it.

Yes I feel stupid. Thank you guys for helping me. This was indeed a strange bug... somewhere in my own brain. I'll go cry in a corner now =P sorry!!!!

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

A good way of checking for access is trying to build something. The game will only display materials or objects that can be pathed to from the tile you're trying to build on.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Maybe they only do really high-priority tasks. If you tell them to deconstruct a construction, do they do that?
