Has anyone tried Magma Man/Fire Man power?
« on: January 11, 2011, 04:20:39 pm »

Because they have a fixed body temperature, magma men and fire men will release heat into a colder environment as long as they are alive. You can see this in how putting them into a body of water causes it to boil without affecting them.

Has anyone, either in vanilla DF of mods, tried to utilize this as a power source before?

I'm not sure how you could use it for anything other than exploding booze barrels?

you can use them as an FPS killing machine.

I had a FB in a water level before, it burned off two whole levels.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Doesn't trapping one in a cage heat up the cage?  What if you trapped one in a cage and designated a garbage dump over it and had the dwarves toss some graphite and booze barrels down there?  It'd be a great deterrant for enemies.  :D

I thought cages kept things from release heat.

Also, can boiling water kill someone, because you could use them to infinitely boil a pool that has a waterfall flowing into (to replace the boiled water) it and throw prisoners into it.

Dig a pit, put magma man into pit, build waterwheels near pit, connect pit to ocean.

Oh wait, here's another one: dig a large cavity into the ground with a small hole at the top, fill most of the way with water, place magma man inside, seal hole.

You now have a geyser/steam mine.

Chain him inside a glacier and then collect the water that flows out from the melt/re-freeze cycles.

Yes, I've caged a forgotten beast that was made of flame, and it kept its -steel cage- permanently hot enough to boil water and dwarves.

If you drop said hot cage at the bottom of a shaft, you can use the shaft as a drain for a water wheel farm. Dwarven Steam Plants are cooler, and more realistic, than Dwarven Perpetual Motion Water Reactors.

You could also use an iron bin full of flaming lignite as a heat source for the steam plant.

^Well I stand corrected.

So there is a way to get steam power.

Admittedly, they're both giving an enormous middle finger to conservation of energy, so they're equally unrealistic, but you're right that monster-fueled steam plants are way cooler than water wheels feeding each other.

How does one utilize steam to create power?

Actually I read that wrong. He's not "really" using steam power, he's just using it to get rid of water.
