Duel-Action Fishery (Will it work?)
« on: January 12, 2011, 08:18:14 pm »

So my idea is to have my dwarves dig out a nice largish area connected directly to the ocean, to let my dwarves fish for their delicious dinner. Since this ocean they're going to be fishing from is Untamed Wilds / Joyous Wilds, I don't want my dwarvsies to die, and will fill this chamber with cage traps, that will be placed when the chamber is dry. It will be drain-able as well.

So will fish come into this dug out area as long as there's water? Will sea serpents come in too?

The 'fishing' job is unrelated to actual physical presence of fish, instead generating raw fish objects depending on the physical location of the water where the dwarf is fishing.  In my experience it appears that you need to have the dwarf fishing out of the actual ocean to catch ocean fish, although artificial bodies of water near the ocean might still count.

A channel connected to the ocean and full of cage traps will work great for catching non-vermin fish creatures, including sea serpents.  You normally only get one sea serpent per biome, but if you're on an untamed wilds/joyous wilds boundary you might be able to catch a breeding pair.

This sea serpent news is quite saddening...

Hruum... This will require a lot more work than I was hoping for, then.

yes, catching sea creatures in traps requires a lot of work usually.  I remember a certain mer-person thread and a certain walrus thread.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

And damned if their bones aren't the hippest totems this side of the Mountainhome.
