I've been playing for a while and I've definitely been able to farm above ground before (although this is my first attempt in this fort and with this version of DF).

I've done what I usually do; channel out a square on the top layer, ensuring the entirety of the floor of the opened up pit is soil. I then take water from a nearby surface pool and flood the surface of the pit to muddy it. When I try to place a farm plot, placing the cursor over the muddies squares all say the same thing: there is no mud for underground farm.

I've followed this procedure only without opening the ground up to the surface for a subterranean farm and it works perfectly, it only happens with surface farms. I've contemplated digging out the farm, flooding it, then opening the plots to the surface by channeling away the roof.

Having said that, I don't see what wrong. I've used the method detailed above before loads of times and its always worked for surface farms in previous versions as far as I can remember. It also works for underground farms too, using the surface pools I mean.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

You don't need mud for surface farms. That's just a warning that carries over whenever you're making a farmplot, regardless of its position...

Surface farms do not require mud; they need soil, and at least a full z-level of it underneath (meaning sand sitting on top of stone won't cut it).

I see. so if I place a plot and try to plant seeds and otherwise use it, even though the plot placement says it needs mud, it should still be a-okay?

Ack, it works. I never actually tried to build and plant a farm plot because of the message as I assumed it wouldn't work, but it seems to anyway.

Thanks folks!
