Colossus did more than kill dwarves....
« on: November 05, 2007, 12:39:00 am »

Had a forest map on an untamed wilds scene, when a colossus came out to play and murdered a bunch of dwarves and the human caravan who happened to be there. Anyway, I got a serious lockup after the bodies started hitting the floor. Tried the save 3 times and same thing, but only after a lot of the population was dead. Maybe the game has a hard time with keeping track of the death.....

Anyone else notice this?

Now that you mention it, I never attributed it to death, but then it never locked up when all my dwarfs were alive so maybe.

This is happening to me.  I just lost a bunch of dwarves to a goblin siege because I went out after them, instead of just ignoring them, and now it locks up for 15-20 seconds every 15-20 seconds.  Kind of difficult to manage.

That exact same thing is happening to me on my current fort.

This happened to me also. A bronze collosus showed up at my fort so I sent my small army and half my population to tackle it. After defeating it and having 15 dead and around the same amount wounded the game keeps locking up so often that I'm waiting for it to unfreeze more then I'm playing the game itself. A season later with the dead buried and the wounded resting in beds life is starting to turn back to normal, however the lockups continue to happen. I think it also happens for longer and more often as time passes.

mine too

once a couple guys died from hunting and training accidents, my game freezes up every 30-40 seconds for sometimes over a minute

edit:  Ok this bug has made my fortress unplayable. It needs to be fixed

Same here. I accidentally mined out a tile instead of a channel, and flooded my fort with magma. As the death toll rose, freezes happened.

I think this bug is believed to have to do with bad moods. Are you seeing some 'Miserable' dwarves, after all the deaths happened? With a few deaths you're virtually guaranteed to get some tantrumers. This is indeed a pretty serious bug, I only lost one fortress to it but I've had to reload saves whenever more than a couple dwarves have died, or whenever a masterwork item is stolen, just because the tantrums/miserableness or whatever's creating the lag spikes make the game unplayable.

Yep, everyone has gone from ecstatic to unhappy or miserable to down right melancholy after the colossus attack. Everyone except for a few migrant dwarves who I put to work as furnace operators deep in the fortress. *sigh* and I hoped that this tragedy would at least stop the constant parties...

Now I got the urge to test this idea by torturing some poor dwarves at a new fortress. Science for the sake of those still alive, of course   ;)

I've noticed that same lock up problem start to appear after I'd collapsed large room 8 levels deep. (planned as a water tank)

I've disconnected floor on every level leaving only one support cell. After that built a support between topmost floor and one level below. Linked support to the leveler, disconnected topmost floor completely (so the only thing that holds topmost floor was that support) and pull the leveler. KABOOM, everything falls down breaking floors all the way deep. And after that I've noticed that game starts to lock up.

P.S. Room size 31 x 11  squares, 8 levels deep with 4 supports. obeying old 6x6  rule. I have save made just before disconnecting last square and pulling the leveler.

I got tired of one of my fortresses and decided to drop the ceiling on many of the dwarves while they were in the dining room.  A few minutes after the carnage, the game became unplayable.  As others have said, it would freeze for long periods of time.

Did that hurt a lot of dwarves and make them miserable? Apparently, whenever dwarves are tantrumming or on the verge of tantrumming, some process will lock up your game every few minutes with lag. It will keep recovering but the lag-pauses are so awful it's easily described as unplayable.

I've gotten practically permanent lock-up after a Bronze Colossus tore through my army after finding a sneaky way in.
