That... isn't exactly a death sentence. For one thing, the webs might be cave spider webs and not giant cave spider webs, and mere normal-sized cave spiders are mostly harmless. For another thing, giant cave spider webs only mean that giant cave spiders can be present in that cavern, not that they are. In short, if you're exploring the first cavern layer, your miner will probably live to tell the tale, because there's not too much in the way of danger on the first cavern layer.

A web collector led one single trog into my fortress, and it killed 6 dwarves.

Later a troll got lured into my fortress the same way, and got clobbered by a single dwarf flailing around with the wrong end of a crossbow.

Danger comes from unexpected places.

Danger comes from having web collection on auto and taking no precautions.

I don't really think you can assume I've taken no precautions when all that was indicated in my post was that two web collectors had at some point in the lifetime of my fort gone into the underground and ran into trouble.

I can assume that no precautions were taken at the point where these events happened because a troll and trog got into your fort. :P

I didn't speculate on whether or not you then built precautions to prevent it from happening again.
