[v0.27.176.38c] Crash upon starting Dwarf Fortress
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:15:00 am »

I don't know if this problem is fixable by Toady, but I wonder if anyone else experiences the same problem.

In Windows, starting Dwarf Fortress causes the computer to restart.
In Linux, starting Dwarf Fortress with Wine causes a segmentation fault.

The computer is a Gateway E-4610D. The processor is a dual core Pentium D, 3GHz. The computer has 2GB of RAM.

My best guess at the cause is the graphics controller.

(edit)

Well, it seems it was the graphics controller. In Linux, I disabled the DRI (Direct Rendering Interface?) in XWindows and Dwarf Fortress ran alright. But how might one go about fixing this in MS Windows?

Sounds to me like your driver is doing something funky in both cases.

Check to see if your video driver has a config tool, and if it does, try turning everything off (or down to its lowest setting).  If that works, try turning things back on until you figure out what was the problem.

If it doesn't, or if that sounds like too much work, about the best you can do is visit Intel's (or the manufacturer's) website and make sure you have the latest drivers.
