A while back I tried an arena test of 50 dwarves against 50 dwarves, all in spoilertine armor, but one side with wooden shields and one side with steel shields (Every dwarf had an iron spear) to see if material of shields would affect block rates.  I forget the skill setup but it was identical for all dwarves.

Unfortunately I botched the arena setup and only gave them one spoilertine glove and boot, meaning everyone's weapon hand (And left foot) was unarmored, so within moments I had about 90 left hands, left feet, and iron spears lying around.

This incidentally turned into a good test of how shield material can affect a fight.  Everyone on the wooden shield side was dead, and I think the steel shields had lost only a handful of troops, most of which went down from losing their hands or lucky spear shots.

Far as I can tell the defense of all shields is the same, that is the users skill is all that matters with one expection wood shields can still catch fire.
And don't forget dragon breath, I'll stick to iron and steel shields too. Just in case.

Or just for the pure sadistic fun of it. Mod in wooden armour for dwarves and sic them on a dragon . FUN ensues!

Thing about bolts is that master marksdwarfs have an odd habit of shooting everything in the brain and killing them instantly regardless of bolt material.

In lower levelled crossbow users, bolt material is more important.

You know, I never bothered to pay much attention to goblinite before selling it to the elves, but do enemies often lack helms to protect from brain shots?

No, most goblins have helms or caps on, AFAIK.

The markdwarves don't give a damn.

Helms and caps won't guard the face either.

Rather difficult to protect the eyes from bolts...at least until we get goggles.

Barrels made of heavy metal are great if you plan on heading back to your fort in adventure mode and picking up some goods...
