[38b] count helps with construction projects
« on: March 22, 2008, 10:37:00 pm »

I just had an off-by-one error in a construction project, and removed scaffolding that was actually required.  A dwarf got crushed.  Oops.  No issue so far.

The issue is that the dwarf that got crushed was my Count, who had been removing a construction.  It doesn't seem like Counts should be doing this kind of work.  They might get their beards dirty.

It makes me sad, too: I have a huge glass-making industry, and tons of flux and magnetite.  He liked glass and steel.

Yeah, Nobles seem to be doing non-profession jobs; removing construction, at least, maybe harvesting plants as well (though I haven't seen it), certainly pulling levers. It's been reported here before at least once.

Pulling levers seems to make some kind of sense, since there's no way to distinguish between low-priority levers and "oh shit" handles.  Harvesting plants is iffy.  Hard manual labour in a dangerous environment should be right out.

It's Bug 129...  been languishing on the list for a long while, but I guess I've never gotten around to it.

A solution to this via a "menial tasks" profession (off for nobles, on for civilians by default) would be great -- then I could tell my legendary glassmaker not to run off and tear down walls, but instead to keep producing masterwork windows.

I like this.  In fact, I think I suggested almost something like it.  But this is better.

But I like having my children remove constructions and harvest plants!  Saves my good dwarves for other stuff.

My hammerer harvests all of the time, which is great, so he's way out on the map somewhere when a production order violation occurs, and there is plenty of time for the guilty dwarf to suit up in armor before the hammer falls.

Have you weighed that extra time against the inevitable strength buildup through harvesting?

Then we'll get legendary Menial Task-ers.   :D
