"Let's Play" as an Academic Subject
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:43:39 pm »

At an academic conference at Rutgers, some person presented an academic paper on Let's Play, which I felt was really useful in understanding the hobby as a whole. The paper was converted into a four-part series geared towards popular audiences, and while it's generally considered "sub-par" (it uses Pokemon types to classify LPs, which was absent in the actual academic paper), it also brings up new ideas such as a Feminist/Marxist Run, which I'm interested in trying out.

All of the research there focuses on SomethingAwful, which I must admit, was the inspiration I had when I did the "first" LP on Bay12GamesForum: Conflict: Middle East Political Simulation, but it does suggest its inapplicability towards other LP communities such as Youtube.

I wish they had discussed the Animal Crossing LP from Something Awful.  That was epic nightmare fuel!

I would propose we played calculus. After all, after learning DF, a little calculus won't be all that hard..  :P
