[38b] 'woodcutting' doesn't imply 'fight with axe'
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:18:00 pm »

I had a wood burner or somesuch and handed him an axe and told him to chop wood.  Upon drafting (to deal with a kobold), he dropped the axe, because I hadn't also told him to *fight* with the axe.  This seems slightly suboptimal: if I set a dwarf to woodcutting, I'd expect him to start fighting with an axe, like immigrant woodcutters are.

The fact that said wood-burning dwarf died to the kobold is not a bug.

Not a bug at all - wood burning involves no axe at all - so axe using is not preset.

not a bug, unless you'd told him to use an axe when fighting.  For instance, my civvies don't carry around crossbows when they're not drafted, at least I haven't seen them do that.

Seems like a bug to me, since woodcutters have Axe as their weapon class even while civilians.

Oops, I was clear as mud.  Let's try again:
- useless civilian.
- add 'woodcutter'; picks up an axe and chops wood
- draft; *drops the axe*

What's in stars shouldn't occur: woodcutting should imply that your weapon preference is an axe.  For example, here's another scenario (which might also be a nuisance, but one way or another, it should be consistent):
- woodcutter immigrant
- draft
- set weapon preference to sword
- undraft
- the civilian no longer has woodcutting enabled.

Does this repeat?  The code I'm looking at has a specific provision that adds the axe setting to anybody that gets the woodcutter profession, and I've had that work before.  Something could have gone sour in the meantime.

Aha, I was confused.  Setting a useless peasant to woodcutting does indeed add axefighting.

However, the guy who died was a carpenter / woodcutter / bowyer, which implies he immigrated as a woodworker.  My other two woodworker immigrants *also* don't fight with an axe.  I have a save if needed.

Maybe he didn't get the woodcutter profession? If he was a peasant, he might have not developed the needed skill level to get it.

Okay, I've fixed it for immigrants for next time.
