Hermit mode
« on: December 27, 2010, 07:53:04 pm »

While I understand that there are ways to do so by killing all comers, It would be interesting to have a 'hermit' mode. Like a mix of Adventure mode and Fortress mode, but instead having one, maybe two dwarves build a fortress, with practically no newcomers, and rarer caravans. To me, it sounds like a recipe for 'fun'. On the plus side, you could also use the inherently smaller numbers to have the same command as the item testing arena- Namely, the control. Goblin trying to steal your things? Take control of your dwarf and cut off his hands. Gorillas bugging you? Keep them in place by stabbing them in the foot. Don't like hordes of needy dwarves, and too overwhelmed to kill off the needy ones that you don't need? Start a game where they just aren't there.

You can set your population cap to 1.   It's not exactly what you want but it should meet most of the criteria.

You'd think it would, but it doesn't.
Population is hardcapped at a minimum of 10. Even when you set population cap to 1, you will still get immigration waves if your population is below 10.

Unless this has been changed in the 2010 versions

When we get adventure mode building, if caravans will be able to visit adventure sites, this'll be easy.

Oh. Well, I guess this shows just how little I've played this game... How do you set your population cap? xD

As a hermit veteran I like this idea. The biggest problem with the current set up is that Dwarves start out with friends, meaning your unlucky survivor could easily throw a tantrum when he sees his two friends impaled by spears and responds by taking a jump into a river. Which happens one to many times.

It seems that this idea is subset of "allow us to change amount of dwarves with which we embark".

Which I very much support. Both for minimal "no stuff, one dwarf" embark as well as for possiblity to embark with dozens of dorfs to skip waiting for imigrants part.
