Fighting a bronze colossus: Lasher owns
« on: December 24, 2010, 01:38:55 am »

I am swordsman. My companions are a 2 macemen, 1 axeman, 1 pikeman and 1 lasher. We're fighting a colossus, every attack "glances off" except for those made by the lasher, for some reason he's fractured the colossus all over. Each time I try to hit the colossus my companions attack as well but the only one who gets "fracturing the X" is the lasher.

What's that all about, do whips have some sort of special anti colossus property or what? is it a bug?. Oh yeah the guy has a copper whip by the way.

its probly because whips have such a tiny contact area and the game uses all the force behind the whip treating it like a sold object like a really sharp and skinny ten foot long needle traveling at an ungodly speed.

its also why gobbo lashers can slice n dice up yer steel armored dwarfs in fortress mode

Also, slashing weapons don't work against armor (or, in this case, metal bodies) unless they're stronger than the armor in question.  In the case of bronze colossi, this means steel or adamantine.  I'm not sure if the lasher will actually be able to KILL the colossus, although he can wound it quite nicely; a steel battle-axe is your best bet (although even with that it takes a ludicrous amount of time to properly hack off the head to kill it).

Whips are blunt weapons; scourges are edged.  Both use the whip skill.  The main difference is that the latter will actually pierce your brain; the former will only smash your skull into your brain.

However, depending upon the ineffable combat physics, a blunt weapon with a sufficiently small contact area (whips being the prime example) may act more or less the same way as an edged weapon against certain materials.

Scourges have 2/5ths the speed and 10x the contact area though, so they're much worse against armor...

I'm rather sure that you won't. I had a lasher disable all of one's limbs and heavily damage every visible body part, but it just wouldn't die and eventually she got exhausted and killed when it pushed her.
