"d"esignate then
"j" to dig a downwards staircase. (At this point you have only dug half the staircase the half going down)
Then go down one Z level (Shift + < or > to navigate Z levels)    Then "u" for up staircase (below your down staircase)
Hope that helps.

Now, my miner has decided to stand still. And not do anything. Except drink beer.
Well, I hope that's beer.

Also c(h)annels make downward ramps, and (r)amps make upward ramps.
They say ramps have better effect on FPS, but should be planned with accuracy - see wiki

They'll run around in terror unless they're drafted into the military, regardless of any military skills they may or may not have.  I find that miners make good fighters in the initial stages of a fortress, given that they use their mining skill to determine how good they are at hacking away at enemies with their picks.

Cmon there is more to it than that...  There will be some running around involved, probably some clothes getting ripped off, some dogs jumping around trying to chew on the goblins, things like that  ;D

Goblins are either terrible at aiming or horribly accurate, depending on whether their aim is to kill or to cause pain.

Quoth the combat report: The hammerdwarf strikes the kobold in the upper tooth with his *silver war hammer* and the severed part flies off in an arc.

and it truly did.

he then bit him in the midriff, latched on firmly, and shook him until his guts were popping out.

buisness as usual in throatlaboured.
