I don't know if I like that or not, but if I'm reading it right this might mean a return to the days of people doing day-long rants against bills they don't like, which sounds like it'd be fun to watch.
It would at least cut down on the number, since you'd have to actually stand there reading the phone book and stuff. Back in the old days, I think Strom Thurmand's wildeyed eight hour rants against miscegenation did more to end segregation than any President. It wouldn't just be the time cost, people would actually have to defend things like filibustering the defense budget to stall time on other bills, instead of tying up legislation for months with secret voiceless holds on everything.
It wouldn't make sense for the conservative Democrats to choose now to champion it. It would though if they were setting things up for a possible 2012 conservative takeover.
There's not a whole lot of "conservative Democrats" left, although the Senate still has it's third-round holdouts. I think they're smart enough to notice that almost all of the House and Senate Democrats who survived the last election were the non-conservative ones in non-conservative districts. Going by the incredibly short sighted strategizing of politics, they'll believe it's in their best interests to be "through and through" Democrats instead of pretending to be Republican-lite, since that tactic didn't save anybody. You can already see it happening in all the crap they passed in the last few days, and Harry Reid's sudden possession of a spine.
