Floodgate traps?
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:44:07 am »

ok so i've been wondering,
if a floodgate closes and there's nowhere for the creature standing on that tile to go will it smash it?

ex. ===            = -walls
     =f =            f - floodgates
     =f =            x - locked door
     =f =
     =x =

under normal circumstances i would use an atom smasher but, the space in which this system goes would be impractical for one.

As far as I can remember a floodgate will not "close" if an object or creature is on top of it. The exception is fluids.

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

A bridge would literally have the same effect.
But get creative try something like flood gates that bridge off a small area then activate upright spears hooked to repeater.

It's perfectly workable to build a 1x3 drawbridge that opens toward the left or right of that diagram.

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

Try making a hallway like this

# = wall
X = floodgate
+ = (trapped) floor

##X##
##+##
##+##
##+##
##X##

Stretched out as long as you can manage (you can make it twist and turn too, it's just simplest to diagram a straight line). set up a lever outside this trap or a pressure plate inside which is linked to close both floodgates, trapping the victim inside with whatever else you have in there (repeating spike traps, magma flow, etc.)

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."
