So since I have no iron I requested the caravan to bring armor for me. This has worked reasonably well with the exception of gauntlets which just sit in the stockpile.
I suspect this is because these gauntlets the merchants bring look like this:
(Steel gauntlet)
Whereas the gauntlets that my dwarwes will actually wear(from immigrants) look like this:
(Steel right gauntlet)
(Steel left gauntlet)

I noticed this one. I bought a masterfully decorated gauntlet for my captain, but it's just stuffed inside a bin along with socks
