I just dig a channel most of the way around my map and chain animals to the open part. Detects ambushes pretty well.

 Well if you want to know if ambushes are on the map then look at the civilisations screen, it seems to work for me. Of course, finding where the ambushes actually are is more dangerous fun.

Dig a perimeter defensive ditch early, wall behind it. Set up watchtowers, with fortifications, with windows in it. Place watch animals safely behind the glass. As a bonus, set up a walkway,behind the walls fortification, where patrolling soldiers might spot the enemy, and let you prepare. Remember, living kobold thieves, as well as wild animals, are good spotters
