I've embarked in the Grand Canyon...
« on: December 23, 2010, 07:16:43 am »

...decided to aim for creating a waterfall instead of mining out a volcano.

Two rivers meeting, terrain not entirely flat, flux - looked a good site. Let's embark...

Hang on - half the map is missing!  No, it's just there is a small squarish plateau, where we embarked, and a 14 z-level drop to a river that is wider than 2/3 of the map.  It joins another very wide river too, and a small island that's just connected to the other edge of the map sits at the confluence. There's also a small river forming a perfect waterfall for me.

All the migrants so far have entered from the other side, and I have had to tunnel under the %##^ Colorado River several times to try and let them in - I got two waves make it to my fort at the same time, as they could only cross when the river froze in Autumn.

Could be fun, could suck.  Anyone else done anything constructive with a HUGE river and a vertical cliff? Can I biuld a series of bridges to cross it, nd what happens to them if I raise one?

Build waterwheels on the river, pump stacks to the magma sea then fill the canyon with magma and carve your fortress out of the resulting obsidian?  Should be really easy to defend against sieges as well if you've tunnelled under the river, you could reroute the river into the tunnel while the goblins are passing through.  Ideally you've also managed to mix in some carp with that.

Also I don't think you can use a bridge as a support for another bridge.

Sounds a lot like my current map, except my canyon's a wee bit deeper and my dwarves started on the river instead of the plateau.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.
