Rare Animal Pets

Will dwarfs only adopt animals that they have a preference for?  I have some exotic animals with high pet values set to be available for adoption, but no one adopts any of them.  Will no one adopt a gorilla, for example, unless they specifically prefer gorillas?

As far as I know, this is the case. I also suspect that dwarves are more likely to have preferences for domestic animals.

Well, I guess that means I just get a lot more exotic meat.  I thought rare pets for everyone = everyone happy because of high pet values, but oh well.

You can put your caged animals in the middle of your dining hall for your dwarves to enjoy, or a separate rooms designated from the cage as a zoo. That way the dwarves get happy thoughts, and you don't have to worry about pets pathing everywhere.

Having dwarves adopt them wouldn't be very good either, considering if Uristmcsoldiersquadleader brought his pet cave crocodile into a war and it died he wouldn't be very happy.
