The makeshift salon, little more than the cleared out ground floor of one of the larger collapsed buildings, was as crowded as usual. Stone blocks made for passable seating and furniture, and food and drinks were usually available, although service was uniformly bad. Mostly, though, people came to swap news, discuss their latest projects, and bounce experimental ideas off each other. Plain old gossip was not unknown, but it was generally agreed that the salon was not the place for it. This was a place for information that mattered.
A bit off to one side, Professor Dormond was rambling to a small crowd of students about his next project.
"And we haven't identified a single mineral that existed back home! Everything's new! This table? New stone. The floor? Another new stone. We're cataloging everything we can find, trying to figure out what the best structural materials are. Even with no rain, I'd really like to see a roof over this place. Of course then we'd need a good light source; not that much burns around here; what we've got mostly gets used to cook..."
