Rain Catchers or How Did I Stopped Playing Rivers
« on: December 16, 2010, 07:53:53 pm »

So, after years looking for an evil biome without aquifers I finally found one.
As I embarked, I noticed, "No river or brook".
I kept playing, and built a cistern very early (on the first season If I recall correctly)  and had no problem with the winter.
However, when the scorching summer came, all the water on the map vanished ,except for my cistern.
It's been 6 years now, my cistern is still quite full from rainny seasons which fill it's nearby murky pool to about 2/7 and then get pumped inside my reservoir.

The problem is, whenever I "touch" a murky pool, be it digging inside it or expanding it, or chanelling around it, like trying to make the water go down a corridor, it always catches less rain than the others.

I built a small 3x2 open pool beside a (roughly) 7x7 murky pool, that got about 3/7 rain on it every rainny season, then build a pump to fill the open pool.
The rainny season came and filled the MP, then, after some pumping I got the OP filled with 4/7.
A season later all the water had evaporated.
I tried flooring all the open pool beside the entry spot for the pump, when the next rain season came, the MP got only a few 1/7 squares.

Is there any way to collect rain efficiently, or should I search the caverns for a lake? (Dug like hell over there, found a magma pool and several ant men, but no lake till now)

Flooring over the murky pool was a mistake. As it turns out, rain only collects on murky pool tiles. Expanding a pool won't collect rain any faster, and in fact will slow it down as the water spreads out and evaporates.

The best way to collect rain might be to di a ramp one z-level below the pond on the pond's edge. That way you don't destroy any rain collecting tiles and it will automatically flow underground to your cistern. Just don't make the collection tunnel too long or the water will evaporate before it reaches your cistern.

Also, if you prefer to play without aquifers, they can be modded out. Go to the raws folder and look for the inorganic txt files. Stone_layer and soil both have entries with the [AQUIFER] tag. Delete that, and you're golden. If you are modding an existing world, you'll need to mod the raw files in the save folder.

Lol, true Dwarves don't mod aquifers out, they build hollow Adamantine pillars filled with masterwork Adamantine statues of pillars that are filled with statues (of pillars that are filled with statues, and so on and so forth), and then drop them onto the aquifers, so the sheer recursive awesomeness causes the aquifers to explode, clearing the way so the Dwarves can get down there.

True Dwarves don't need to mod aquifers out. We have elven slaves for that sort of thing.

True Dwarves don't mod aquifers out, they just apply magma.

true dwarves die horrible aquifer related deaths and throw their friends into fits of insanity.
...and after that apply magma.
