Ok so I got my brother into DF recently, and he's going through the same issues we do. can't get Urist to farm, can't get food to Urist before he starves, but he says he's had Urist LEAVE THE SETTLEMENT.
...
Seriously, I've never seen this, can they walk off the map and your unit list?

honestly, that was a ragequit moment.  The friggin thief just walked on past and grabbed it.  There were like 100+ floors yet to be placed.
My computer struggled to load all the demons.  Then, next frame, I check the unit list....
The last.... 4+ pages.... all demons.

Perhaps your brother should post the message he read. If he read a message. Seems more likely that someone died. Check unit list for deceased dwarves. Another possibility is "I swear I had another miner dwarf! Really! Oh, wait, that was in the last fort..."

Yeah I asked him but he said he was busy with other stuff at the time [his farmers wouldn't farm and he seemed to have everything set up, unforbidden seeds, corps set for all 4 seasons, etc but no farming going on]  so didn't get any screenies, he said that the dwarf left his unit list and literally walked off the map. dead units stay as deceased, I know that anyway. and he doesn't have atom smasher tech yet [didn't know about mechanics], If that takes them off the list when the body's gone. he isn't that far along. though the @#$ got a working smelter before me...
Anyway It was an odd enough thing I figured asking wouldn't hurt since I didn't find anything with a search about dwarves possibly randomly walking off if they were low enough. would a dwarf killing [say tantruming?] another dwarf change them from the fort dwarf to a hostile? I remember reading about someone's soldier killing a mountainhome merchant's horse and becoming hostile to the fort...

dead units stay as deceased
Then the dwarf in question died.

Yes, there have been reports of that happening, and is called a loyalty cascade; the killer becomes an enemy of the fort, and someone kills him, BUT he was still a member of the civilization so the person who killed him becomes an enemy, and so on. I haven't seen it happen myself though, but I usually nip tantrums in the bud, before they have a chance to cause a bunch of damage.

I've never heard of anything like that happening. Chances are it's just a mistake.

Is he absolutely certain it wasn't a merchant/liason/other foreign dwarf?

yeah I asked him about it being a liason or something, he said it was his fisherdwarf, who he was trying to get enough food until his farms started working.

Edit1: anyway, if he gets back on, I asked him to make screenies if it happens again [fort was abandoned, figures.]. Its vanilla 31.16 he's playing on atm, and at this point I'm doubtful it's going to happen again if it happened at all, but he promised to get screenies if it does [asked for screen shots of the dwarf, unit list, and the announcement, should I ask for anything else?]

Edit2: Nah, hes pretty honest about stuff. You're probably right that it wasn't anything more then tantrum spiraling and dieing real fast or something. Oh well, thought it was a feature that didn't show up often or something.

Is your brother prone to jerking you around by telling you something plausable then watching you act on it?

Have you checked gamelog.txt in the Dwarf Fortress folder? If the announcement occurred, it should be there.  That way you can at least get an exact quote.

He might have gotten the message "Fisherdwarf has withdrawn from society". The first time I got this message for a jeweler in my very first fort, I thought that he had abandoned my settlement because I was taking too long to set up beds. Then he died because there was no jeweler's workshop.

hmm, I'll have to ask him if he has the files still. If its been abandoned will the text file still be there? I think his fort might have died a few times since then due to.... well anyway I'll ask. Sounding more like a mood more and more, When he needed help with getting his food supply stable I noticed a moody dwarf that he didn't. meh thats probably what it was then.

The gamelog should still be there.  I don't think it ever gets wiped.  It tracks every announcement from every fort played in that folder.
Also, that announcement does sound pretty close to "Withdraws from society," and I didn't recognize my first strange mood either, so that may indeed be what happened.

bah looked in the log, his dwarves just kept going secretive and withdrawing from society followed with melancholy.
