Can dwarves have preferences for adamantine and raw adamantine? I've never seen it myself, and I was wondering why, if they don't ask for adamantine, they're quite happy to ask for slade.

Yes they can, but I'm too scared to put them as leader so IDK. But they likely do ask for those stuff.

The leader in one of my forts has it and asks for Adamantine items from time to time, but its not a problem as there is over 10k of it on that embark according to prospector.  :P

Brand new fortress, only two years old.
First mayor gets elected.
His first mandate is announced.
He wants 3 adamantine items forged.

I dropped him in the volcano.
He found some adamantine.

yeah one of my current forts has a raw adamantine loving mayor which is a bit tricky.  smelting wafers or forging with wafers doesnt work, hes only happy with stuff created using the raw rock form......which is a right PITA!

Incidentaly, he broke his knee and needed some stitches, Urist McExtravagant my medic gave him cotton-candy ones.  Unfortunatly does not generate a thought :(
