Dwarf Fortress stops responding, then shuts down...
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:32:33 pm »

Since this isn't really a bug as much as a problem I have, I didn't post this in 'bug reports'.
Anyways, it starts up perfectly good, and I can even play it for a little while. But as soon as I start giving mah dwarfs commands the game stops responding and the DF screen goes white for a few seconds, then it shuts completely down. This has started to irritate me, a lot, and I've started hitting things... So please, if you guys can think of anything that might help me play DF on my computer, share them with me.

Also! I play on an OK computer, not a really great one, but I (by that I mean my school) just installed Windows 7 on it. But when I play the 40d version, it works great, but as soon as I try DF2010 it doesn't work... So I don't know...

I only experience this when I play a particularly rampaging map full of FPS-killing crap.  I beleive it's linked to RAM crashes.  It seems to happen anytime DF exceeds 1.5 GB on a 32-bit OS system.  On 64-bit OS systems, it does not seem to occur, provided you have enough RAM.

I reccomend having NO LESS than 2 GB of RAM, as DF can use up to 1.5 GB.  (normally, it's under 512 MB, but some maps are more... featureful than others.)

I feel the pain. I have never had crash problems before with DF. Today I made my first ever efficient large-scale steel production chamber (without magma) consisting of around 14 smelters and 7 forges churning out one set of steel equipment + weapon each iteration with a team of 8 miners supporting the raw materials and 12 haulers, all in one big steel-focused burrow. I prepared all of this in one season. And it crashed before the new season arrived.

I lost everything. I could cry.

Yeah, I always save after designating or queueing, or completing anything cumbersome, or right before expecting gobbos.  Too many lost forts...

I also find the crashes happen less often if you turn off temperature and weather (along with a massive FPS boost)
