Questions about SMOKE and MIST (well, actually, just smoke)
« on: December 10, 2010, 09:18:45 pm »

The question is: Do clouds of smoke block vision?
If so, can I use this to fool invaders into thinking there's no way into my fortress?
And what would work the best to achieve this goal?
For some reason, I have an urge to make at least one fort with a smoke screen around it as defense, powered by burning graphite or lignite or what have you.

Currently envisioning it as either individual pits of flammable material set on fire with grates on top, or a long trench around my base.

How would I do this? et cetera

I think you can path through them, but most creatures pathing through it fall unconscious, so it makes a good way to disable invaders.

in that case, build a room with forever burning lignite bins underneath your entrance.  as invaders approach, pull a lever that removes a bridge or hatch covers, exposing the burning things, releasing smoke to cloud the bridge.  watch as invaders fall unconsciouson the bridge.  Retract your bridge, resulting in !!invaders!!

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I see.
*looks at Wiki*
Now, some more practical questions.
The wiki says that things that inhale smoke may fall unconscious OR have internal injuries.
Are these internal injuries any impairment to invaders?
Also, if I put a roof over the smoke pits, can I increase the effect (by increasing the density)?

Or I could just do that....

What you want is a setup 3 z-levels deep. Top level is a bridge of floor grates that will let the smoke through. below that is a bridge, normally held down. Below that is some forever burning bins. Raise the bridge, smoke flies upward.

Also note that smoke is a major FPS drain.

I was hoping to weaponize smoke by setting a bin of lignite on fire at the bottom of a shaft, and then using valves to move the smoke where I wanted it, but according to the wiki, smoke doesn't transit Z levels.

If this is changed I can imagine a lot of exported fun.

Maybe you could move the smoke with burning cats.
