Artifact thievery?
« on: December 08, 2010, 04:38:15 pm »

Let's say I have a dwarf go into a mood, and he needs stone blocks. I also have a caravan at my fort. The caravan has blocks. Will the dwarf steal the blocks? (Assuming no other blocks are available.)

Or maybe there's a god who's just completely insane and sends you to Detroit, Michigan in a new body if you ever utter the name "Pat Sajak".

Find out.

You mean wait until I coincidentally have traders and a mood at the same time? I'm not interested enough to dedicate the rest of my life to it.

Why would he? Dwarves don't use forbidden items either.

Dwarves have been known to steal cloth and thread EN MASS from caravans to do the usual overstock of c&t in the hospital.

Caravans don't seem to mind much, mind you.  As long as you don't unforbid their items, or seize while trading, or hurt one of the traders, they kinda just wave their hand to it.

The dwarf will just sit there in their workshop and wait until the good is legally purchased. I've had that happen a few times, mostly with leather, but occasionally with thread or metal.

trader goods are not 'forbidden' once they are loaded at the depot.  dwarves have been known to stock hospitals from unowned depot items before due to a bug.  Not sure what a moody dwarf will do.

It's not just hospital stocking; if you are out of food then when the caravan shows up your dwarves will bum rush it and chow down

By out of food it means no food.  Dwarves will eat their cats live and raw if you have no food as well.

And I just fallowed all my farms at reading this post. Make sure you pick the hair off first, guys!

But as far as I've seen, moody dwarves won't steal from caravans; you have to buy the stuff first, then they'll bolt for it (unless some schmuck decides he'll drag it to the stockpile first). I've had dwarves demanding silk thread, and not having any myself, praying for the caravan to show up before he started clawing at the walls.

Confirming that. Right now, a moody dwarf that had already gathered some ingredients asked for gems. I immediately bought them from the very convenient caravan that was present already at the depot. As soon as they were traded, said dwarf rushed to loot the sardonyx and finish his artifact. So yeah, no theft.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.
