make drained murky pools farmable
« on: December 19, 2010, 04:32:01 am »

Hi (first post yay)

I drained a pool that was above me to make an underground farm and I noticed that the soil where the pool was is not farmable.
So it treats this place as underground and doesn't want to make a farm there, however the ground of a murky pool should have a thick layer of mud to be an excellent farming spot.
Also why does it treat it underground when it's actually above ground since there's no roof over it, it actually should be an above ground farming spot and not an underground farming spot.
It would be nice to close this gap and make tiles like these farmable as above ground farms.

Is there a workaround for this? Like channeling the bottom of a murky pool, building a floor there, and mudding it?

But this would mean destroying the floor of the pool, however that's exactly what I do not want to do.
I'm mainly suggesting this because it makes no sense being able to farm on floors that have "a dusting of mud" while not being able to farm tiles where the pool used to be and which should be covered in lots of mud.

This may sound stupid, but bear with me I'm dealing with DF xLogicx here. Click the 'k' key, move it over the bottom of the Murky pools, there are three tags Outside, Light, Above Ground. Since Murky pools have 'above ground' tag, you cannot farm underground plants. Underground plants require the Subterranean tag. Problem is there is no way to turn this tag back to subterranean. So even if you covered it with a floor it still is considered 'above ground' (but has the Inside tag instead of the Outside tag). Try draining the water into a separate underground room. Then you should be able to grow the plump helms just fine.

You should have no trouble planting above ground plants in the murky pools though. Enjoy the whip vines!

Personally I think farms should operate off of the 'Inside/Outside' tag rather then the Subterranean/Above Ground tags myself. So something needs to change.

thx for the advice, but I'm not following you here completely.
I did drain the water into the underground to make a muddy ground for farming, so how would draining it into a seperate room be different?
And I'm new to this game, so I may not know enough already, but aren't farm plots set the same way for underground farms as for above ground farms? Because I can't set a farm plot in the remains of a murky pool at all, see the screenshot I linked in my first post.

I just checked in 31.18, and you simply cannot build a farmplot on drained murky pool tiles. At least it there is a floor above.
