My very first Tantrum Spiral
« on: December 08, 2010, 03:52:47 am »

So, I've been playing DF for a about a year now, and I've always gotten bored with/lagged out of a fortress before I got to see one of the infamous Tantrum Spirals. And losing IS fun!

What made it post worthy is a woodcutter, not an axedwarf, no military service, just a woodcutter with an axe, goes berserk in the hospital, where about a third of my dwarfs lie helpless due to FB rot juice of some kind.

The hospital is covered in miasma due to all the rot, so once the berserk leaves the fog about five seconds later, I check the reports to see the damage done.

She killed 22 dwarves! All of them one hit head shots!

That was in the first 5 seconds, she's currently racking up an even higher kill count by murdering babies. And what's left of the military. And everyone's pets.

I'm not complaining or anything, this is the ridiculousness that makes the game fun but damn. Berserk dwarves are scary!

EDIT: Berserk woodcutter finally died to pick severing her lower body. Not sure how that works, but the final tally was 33 total kills, including 5 babies and countless attacking dogs.

I can tell you this:  If you want to engrave that hospital (and you do) the walls are going to be covered in retellings of that event.

Bahaha, that's fantastic. She died in the dining room, so hopefully that event will be recorded as well

Yea, in general the first dwarves you should worry about keeping happy are those that carry axes. Then the miners.

"Urist McClothier has gone berserk!"
"Eh, I'll lose a few dogs over this one."
""Urist McWoodcutter has gone berserk!"
"... Check please."

i tend to build cage traps inside narrow hallways in my fortress just incase something like that happens. I've once lost 54 dwarfs to a sword champion. I endend up traping him by locking a door behind him, kinda cheap iknow, but i wanted my fortress to survive.

Had a miner go berserk during a party in the jail, but he only mined himself 7 dwarfs because the baracks was just down the hall. was tempting to lock the door though.

I prefer dwarves for some things. Like not laying eggs.

I think woodcutting gets factored into their 'fightability' so if he had been hacking down trees for a long time it is possible that that is how he did it.

aren't berserk dwarves capable of destroying furniture, and thus would possibly be able to break out of a locked room?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I got my first tantrum spiral when I unwisely tore down the wall between the hospital and the party room.
