I went to adventurer mode and took my dwarf outside, headed towards a close cave. Entered the site. Ran south to meet the mountain wall. After searching a while, I got message that I had found a great chasm running through the mountain(?!). I also saw an Ironman. And no, there was no chasm.
I proceeded to attack this Ironman and managed to kill it (darn, almost all my blows were glancing blows). Anyway, after the Ironman was dead, I ran south to examine the mountain wall. There was an opening, there was the cave I had been looking for!

However, as I tried to enter the cave, I noticed that the floor of the cave was 1 (or was it 2?) floors lower than the ground was and there was no ramp or no stairs to get down. Crying I left the place. Is there any way to jump down or climb up 1 floor, without going through ramp or stairs?

IIRC, a post on the Gameplay section of the forum claims that you need alt+[direction] to jump into empty space.  No idea if you need an up arrow to climb back up, though.

I'd suggest making sure you CAN climb back up before you jump down there.  Unless I'm mistaking, climbing up is impossible.
