In entity_default.txt, what does [VARIABLE_POSTIONS:] do? I looked in the wiki, but didn't find anything, which probably means it's somewhere blatantly obvious .

As far as I understand, it means that whatever positions (actually responsibilities, not positions, if my hunches are correct) are available to everyone, which is what allows civs with the token to have demons take up positions and such (this is why demons don't always go for the top spot; sometimes you'll see demon liasions and such, as opposed to lawgivers).
