Trouble with rooms
« on: December 04, 2010, 07:34:43 am »

As a quite new Fortress mode player, I'm not exactly familiar with it having only played with one half-assed fortress for 30 min, though I have extensively played Adv. mode. I decided to try it again, now, after 3 (?) months, and I'm doing pretty good, save for my problem here: I've made my dwarves a few bedrooms, which now are just 3x4 spaces surrounded by walls, and created chairs and beds for all of them. ATM the furniture are in a stockpile, but I have no idea how to get my dwarves to carry them into the bedrooms, actually sleep in them and not complain about sleeping in the dirt.

In short, I know how to create a room, but I don't know how to get the beds and chairs out of the stockpile. This probably is just something extremely trivial I have managed to  miss.

EDIT: Damn, I should've posted this in the gameplay questions section. Oh well. Move this if it really bothers someone.

After you make a bed in a carpenters workshop, you have to 'build' the bed (b -b) at the spot you want it, yea took me a while to figure that one out too.

Also, (b) (f) for cabinets and (b) (h) for boxes/bags/chests

Cabinets are only for clothes, chests are for everything else.
Due to a bug, over they years as your dwarves' clothes get tattered, they will claim new clothes, but never actually replace their rags, so they'll end up needing multiple cabinets to hold the "claimed" clothes while they run around naked.Plan on at least 2~3 cabinets after a decade or so. Without cabinet, they just leave the clothes on the floor of their rooms.

They will rarely actually need chests though, except nobles.

For beds, you have to (b)uild->(b)ed then place the cursor where you want the bed to go and then press enter.
Then, some idle dwarf with the furniture hauling labour will bring the bed from the stockpiles.
Once the bed is in place you have to (q)select the bed, make bed(r)oom, and adjust size as desired.
You can also (a)ssign the bedroom to a specific dwarf.
It might also be an idea to set up a dormitory with several beds in the same room for migrants until they earn their own room.

Oh, beds can only be placed inside, so if you're a surface dwarf, you need to build a roof (typically floor tiles on the z-level above).

On the subject of chests, maybe I'm doing nothing more than putting my own stupidity on display here, but I thought I'd point out that a chest made out of stone is called a coffer. I wasted so much wood over the years.
