Let the henchmen go in first, keep just behind them. You don't want to be the first one attacked.

Hopefully you (or one of the hangers-on) have a good weapon because Hydras are tricky otherwise. They have thick hides and are tough. What I do is attack the body and/or legs until the Hydra is too damaged to stand, then strike heads as the chances present themselves. You'll have to jelly all the brains on all the heads to kill it, so try to keep track of which ones you've already pulped so you don't waste hits. ;)

With an edged weapon it's probably possible to slash it up badly and leave it to bleed out, I don't know because I haven't tried it but that's not really an option for you anyway since you've got a hammer.

Well, I was just disappointed. The Hydra died in two turns from my henchmen and not a single one died.

I'm disappointed to say I've never encountered a Hydra anywhere during play. On any version. Same goes for Ettins but fuck those guys.

The red dragon will likely be riskier than the hydra, but probably be easier to kill (sounds like yer buddies got a lucky heart shot)

Dragons are a bit odd though, is your world over 1000 years old?  If so you have a fight on your hands,  if not, you aren't fighting a full grown dragon.  Still dangerous but significantly weaker than they are supposed to be.

P.S.  Er, that is of course assuming the red dragon is just a slightly modded vanilla dragon with a rename and color change.  The above is the case with vanilla dragons.

From what I've seen, hydras are more likely to die from blood loss than they are anything else short of losing all of their heads. I had a quest to kill one the other day and hacked off four of its necks with my two copies of The Twig of Fondling, an artifact adamantine short sword (I love exploiting bugs). This was ultimately a lot cause as one of my meatshields got credit for the kill by nicking an artery in its leg with his halberd.

That sort of thing has cost my dwarf credit for two dragons, that hydra, and a minotaur. I got the last laugh though since I carried those corpses along with another dragon and another hydra back to a lair. Whenever I retire Goden Mengekast the Ace Hardness of Pages, I'm going to build a fort on that lair and feed a continent with the ensuing dragon meat roasts.

Had you stabbed it any before lopping off the heads? The first one I killed only died after I hacked off all seven of its necks. The second one died immediately after the artery was tapped.

On the other hand, butchering that first hydra's body gave me around 130 meat while the last one "only" gave me 90-something meat. So maybe the one killed by the axeman was immature and more susceptible to that sort of thing.

When was this? I've heard that since .17 hydra's don't bleed to death from having just one head cut anymore.
