What's Water

In Adventure Mode, the view option calls what appears to be water on the map "Open Space."

Water is one (or more) steps below open space.   Water is now recessed a level down from the surface, normally.   Same thing happens in Fortress mode.

it's because there is nothing in that space, the water is at 'floor level' even with your feet.

the numbers mean the water is in that square, 7 means it's filling the whole square.

You also have to note the color, bright blue is filling the current viewed level.  Blue is the level below.
