Can't get started
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:05:15 pm »

I'm trying this out for the first time and I keep getting my ass handed to me. I just got scratched SO HARD that it tore my muscle and shattered my skull. Am I doing something horribly wrong? I usually start with putting points in strength, endurance and toughness. I then put points into Hammer, fighting, and dodging. I'm just trying to not get raped so early.

I'm Starting off as a peasant because I'm looking for a little roleplay and I like the idea of a lowly dwarf rising up to legendary status. So unless I really HAVE to I would like to keep it that way.

This game just has a high difficulty curb - No matter what you do, everything is a major threat to your life.

Your skill allocations are ok for now i think

It is extremely unfair in most aspects, but I can tell you something. Put all your points into agility, then put 1 level in the weapon of your choice, and most of them in dodging. It will save your ass.
Since your new to adventure I would recommend demi-god, since it helps you in the beginning and only changes stuff you can normally get in game. However if you don't want to don't.

I'll try the dodging strategy now. Quick question though, I just got jumped in the middle of the night and they descended on my without even giving me a chance to fight back. Was this because I was sleeping? When I engage normally I can take it step by step.

Bogeymen attack during the night, so you have to be inside a building/lair/fortress to not get attacked. Another thing to do is to walk during the night until you get attacked, then you can sleep after you kill them. However bogeymen are tough so you cannot reliably kill them until you level up some skills.

Sleep in houses during the day.

A good strategy is to go in with high agility so you can outrun things whether attacking or fleeing. Throwing whatever you can grab at the enemy is always good. You can train your fighting skills by hunting wild animals. Butcher their corpses (press x and have a sharp weapon to use) and sell these in towns(not hamlets) to buy better gear.

Not yet, that's coming with adventurer sites, which supposedly will happen around the arc we're on. Since the caravan arc works with the site loading quite a bit.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Would be cool if we can dig and bury corpses or just hide items underground like some kind of treasue or just make pitfall traps for enemies around our hideout

Not really. I kinda have a thing for playing games vanilla style.

I'm not the most experienced dude around here, but from what I understand, if you're looking to stay alive, SHIELDS!  If you can, get a nice shield and put as many points as you can afford into Shield User at start.  You'll be able to block most potentially lethal attacks.

It's one of those games that you have to get good at losing before you get good at winning.

Then when you're good at winning, it stops being as fun as losing.

Instead of polluting the board with new threads ill just try to keep them in this one if that is OK. I read somewhere else on this board that removing a shield makes your weapon much more lethal. I tried this but my hammer is still listed as only in one hand. Is it because hammers can't be held with two hands or do I need to specify somehow that I want it held that way.

Depends on whether it's two-handed. I couldn't list them all here, but the way to be sure is to drop/put the shield, check inventory. If it says 'multigrasp' then you need both hands for full effectiveness.
