I have sucessfully navigated the caverns once, The easiest way is to find the location of two caves, and use the overland travel map to gage how far you are from the second exit, and in what direction you need to travel. Granted this was in .15 or .16 (when adventure mode still had smaller towns, before night creatures). At least 2 ranks in swimming are required, even if you dont intend to go swimming, because if you run out of water your only option is to drink water from the pools, which you can actually only drink if its on you (its too muddy otherwise). I found small alcoves to sleep in. I found that mushroom trees hamper progress by a great deal when navigating thin corridor.

So no one has found FBs down there? That was my my real reason for wanting to visit the caves.
