I've noticed that crossing over ice can be extremely dangerous if you're migrating North or South toward warmer regions. The ice starts to melt the further you get out and the warmer the temps. Every time I've attempted this I've ended up falling through the ice as it melts and then it refreezes with me inside.

When you fall into the ice you can't climb back to surface in any way?
