naked dwarves and worn clothing
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:48:49 am »

I'm sure folks have talked about this, but I can't seem to search for or find a thread with an answer.

My little fort is running along with an obscene number of babies and children.  Lately, the clothes on the children have started wearing out.  They freak out in shame over being naked, and then tantrum.  Their brains are shortly smashed by the hammerdwarf.

I've tried "cleanowned" in DFhack, but that didn't help.  There is plenty of new clothing around.  What gives?

Put a farmer workshop on repeat process plants, have a large farm dedicated to growing pig tails, build a pair of looms, and have a clothing workshop on repeat production of tunics, trousers, and shoes.

Thats all you need to do to keep everyone clothed and happy. They will pick up clothing when they need it.

To clean out the used clothing, have just a single stockpile for finished goods. You can either trade the bins of worn clothes away to a caravan or dump them into an atom smasher when the clothes stockpile gets full.

Alternatively, make it so that the finished goods stockpile also acts like a refuse stockpile. This will cause all clothing stored in that stockpile to rot away to nothing. This affects both clothing and armor on that stockpile, so be careful if you have goblinite stored there. As you are producing new clothes on a continual basis its okay if extra clothing all rots away. Even a fully naked dwarf will only have to wait a few seconds to get a full set of new, masterwork clothing.

Thank you!
I hope that solves it.  I think I already have enough clothes, but it's really so hard to tell.

Rope reeds can be grown all year. Set up an above ground farm if you can.

1. Every above ground civilization uses rope reeds.
2. Rope reed clothing is incredibly useful.
3. Elves drink booze. By that logic, booze = bad.

Calm your xenophobia, there is only so much Dwarfiness you need to inject into a pastry to make it taste like death.

(factcheck?)  you might need to double-count your mil dwarfs if you have them replace their clothing with a uniform that includes shoes/shirts/pants.

Military dwarves seem okay if they're wearing only steel armor and nothing else while on duty. When off duty they seem to go pick up clothes as normal.

Either way, just so long as you're constantly producing new stuff and destroying old stuff it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah i've had this problem.
Making enough cloth is impossible.

my solution was to buy the cloth by selling crafts (Gold toys, lead goblets, encrusted Gold crafts...).
Luckily most caravans bring a long tons of cloth, Buy it all.
turn the cloth into clothes and you will have a fully dressed fort.

OR

Make everything really nice, masterpiece statues, legendary dining halls, bedrooms for all, good food, good drink! And children won't mind being naked as much, or their parents won't notice the loss of their child. :P

(seriously, I have dwarfs who are "Very happy, has lost a child recently". They are fickle creatures.)

We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.
