bed job cancelled need wooden log
« on: October 28, 2007, 10:38:00 am »

I have a carpenters workshop and just across the floor in another room is a wood stockpile which has quite a few 'pine logs' in it. Yet whenever I order the carpenter building to create a bed it cancels that job saying that it needs wooden logs.

Could this be a bug? (in the way that the game does not interprete 'pine logs' as being 'wooden'?)

I'm wondering if the carpeter can't get to the logs for some reason - like his workshop wall is blocking his path or the door to the other room.  My dwarves don't ignore pine logs and make beds out of them just fine.  I would try moving the wood stockpile to another location altogether.  If you undesignate the stockpile and the dwarves can't move the wood somewhere else, there's probably something blocking the path to the wood.

If those pine logs are tasked for something they will be "un-available".
For example to be moved to another stockpile ????
Or if you have multiple carpenter shops going and carpenters from those shops have alredy "claimed" the logs?

One last thing it "might be" is check to make sure the stockpile allows logs. I think the system gets funny saying "there are no logs here" if the stockpile doesn't accept logs anymore even though they are there. (Custom stockpile?)

-and it might be a bug.. I'm just trying to be helpfull.

Ah yes, thanks. That was the problem. I tore down the wall between the carpenter and the stockpile and then he was aware of the logs and made me that bed. (So it was a pathfinding problem? Or are dwarves always just aware of the things they can directly see?)

Basically, if it's there and they can't get to it, it's a pathfinding problem.  I don't think they necessarily need to be able to SEE items to use or haul them, though - something was preventing the dwarf from actually walking to the wood in question.

For example, if I'm mining at the other end of the fortress with "gather stone" turned off and a gem turns up, one of my haulers knows to come and get it even though he's having a smoke outside.   :D

I'm not sure how new you are to the game so this may or may not be a dumb question, but are you aware that it's easy to build a workshop in such a way that a dwarf is trapped inside it? When you go to place it the dark green squares will be impossible to pass through once it's finished, so make sure the only exit isn't next to one of them.

It sounds like that was the trouble. The dwarf got trapped and could not reach the logs. But what I'm trying to figure out is why he got the "needs logs" message instead of the "can't find path" message?

Or is the "can't find path" message there first and the "needs logs" message after it?

Then I would have told him about workshop building to trap a guy or looking for locked doors or flooded areas cutting off the path...

I think that the can't find path error is only triggered when there is a locked door or something similar.  At least that's my experience.

I'm a total newbie to this game, so if I should ask more silly questions in the future, just assume that the solution is probably the simplest possible.

Well, to illustrate the problem I had above, I have made this screenshot:

So yes, the dwarf was just trapped in his workshop.

You don't need that support in the middle of you wood stockpile, you know.  Only an open 7x7 area will collapse.  And even that is going away in the next version.
(but something like it will presumably be added later)

No worries Dennis.

I know I've done that one myself a bunch of times.
