Floor grates and line of sight

A couple of questions:
1) How much of a lower level does a dorf see while standing on the grate?
2) How much of a lower level does a dorf see while standing near the grate?
3) Same questions about animals.
4) What will happen if a dorf sees an enemy below?

Some counterquestions:
1) Why don't you abandon and visit the grate as an adventurer?
2) Why should animals be different from dwarves?
3) What will happen if a dorf sees an enemy?
4) What are you planning to use the answers for?

1) Because I'll only see that 5x5 (or whatever) rectangle in upper right corner?
2) Weeeell... Why SHOULDN'T they?
3) But maybe this case will be an exception, since enemies in no way can reach the dorfs?
4) To make a sorta watchtower above my entrance corridor that contains a meeting hall :) Let them watch their own hides!

1) You could use the 'l'ook command to see the rest, but honestly that sounds like a ton of hassle. We don't know if dwarves and adventurers use the same LOS anyway.
2) In Dwarf mode at least, they should be the same. This is my semi-educated guess.
3) Nope, dwarves still freak out when they see enemies that can't path to them. It's really annoying.
4) That's a brilliant idea, actually.

The best way to test this out for certain is to just build it and see what happens, IMHO.

Some countercounter questions.

1) Why would he go to all that trouble (and ruin his fort!) to get an answer to a question someone might already have?
2) Why wouldn't they be? We know that hunting dogs can see twice as far as normal dogs, so at least SOME animals may be.
3) Why are you asking this?
4) Why are you trolling the OP?

Aah, you meant detection range, not sight range. As the dwarves have spherical detection range (circle with radius 1, unless good observing), they can probably detect any skulking filth that is sneaking around under them. The sight range does not matter in this case.
But I don't know if the grates block line of effect (especially ranged effect with goblin ranged ambushes), what with all the phasing bolt bugs and so on. Also, you cannot rely on your dwarves to stay watching all the time, and even then, you still have to get them out of the tower to mince the thief or ambush.
Try chaining up two dogs in your entrance. Should help. But I must admit, it is way less dwarfy.

Back in 40d, I had a fort that suffered from lots of kobold thieves. To scare them away without losing guard dogs, I built a platform above the entrance hall that had a central solid floor with a restraint and several grates around it. It didn't seem to work until I removed the grates and had 'open space' around the 'dog-on-chain-on-floor-on-support' in the middle of the hall.

I also noticed that grates block sunlight. I guess that grates block light, sight, items, projectiles, arrows, falling items, but allow water and magma to pass through.
