Diogenes lived in a barrel, because it was easy to do in those days. It was turned on it's side and buried into a hill, so it was a bit like a hobbit hole. It had a door and a cooking fire outside, so it was actually more comfortable than it sounds.

He also did a very dwarvenly thing: he built a giant wall in the middle of the busiest marketplace in Greece, which he inscribed with all his thoughts against materialism. Everybody who went to market had to look at his wall.

Diogenes spent the last years of his life going from house to house in the middle of the night, banging on the door, waking everybody up, and drilling them on their spiritual lives. The "Hermit" card in the Tarot deck depicts him doing this.
