Probably reported already, but corpse on floodgate
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:06:00 am »

My first corridor in my latest fortress was essentially an enclosed deathtrap; as soon as anyone wandered in (immigrants, nobles, siegers) I would lock the doors and flood the hall using a lever from the other side of the river and two floodgates next to the river on the other side. It all worked great for a while (though having to put away hundreds of pieces of clothes is a bitch and a half), UNTIL one of the drowning dwarves decided to save himself by swimming up the channel hallway as it was filled with water and then dying messily on top of my opened floodgate. When I closed it again the corpse and all his clothes were visible but the floodgate was not (unless I examined the square) and people could walk over the closed floodgate to pick it up.

Interesting find, first time I've heard about this.

I've actually had this happen a few times, and in the case of some of my poorly planned fortresses, it meant my death-room was unuseable. As soon as they decided to die on the floodgate, opening or closing it did nothing to the flood in the room.

My workaround is to make a nice little tunnel between the room, and the floodgate, so there would be no way the drowning dwarves could get to the floodgate.

Just my two dwarven skulls.

yep. it's an old design issue...user design issue, that is. design better :P
If I am making a drowning room I make a nice S hallway that is a length of at least 12 tiles before the floodgate.

Yes there are some design flaws with how he was doing it, however this part sounds to be a bug.
