This hero need not work
« on: September 24, 2006, 06:06:00 am »

Not sure whether this counts as a bug, but not sure it was intended either, so I thought I'd just ask...

After a couple of years of intensive sparring, I've managed to get 3 of my dwarves up to Hammer Lord status. Unfortunately, two of these are part of my fortress guard. Now I no longer have access to a v-p menu for them, meaning I can't relieve them from guard duty to draft them into my regular military so I can have a better chance of getting them where they're needed (like, fighting off the goblin invaders instead of sitting at the bottom of my fort waiting in case the demons should train a miner. That sort of thing.)

For the unit list.
<c> To zoom to the creature.

For the preferences list.

Last time I was there I saw the option for turning fortress guard on and off. I belive it was <shift>

That doesn't work for weaponmaster/lords. The preferences are replaced by "This hero need not work". Thus this topic.

Ahh, ok. Didn't know that.

I'll have to remember to move the experienced warriors off guard duty and into the regular military when they get close then.

The biggest problem is that fortress guards don't seem to do anything but train. If they're near an ambush they may fight, but that's it. I use a system of traps, chained dogs, and rotating active duty squads on patrol, to meet my security needs. So far at every ambush there's been at least one soldier and three dogs to put it down. I have just as many guards as soldiers, but they never do any fighting.

Hmm, a Guard Station building would help here.

IMHO legendary combat-dwarves should automatically be removed from the royal/fortress guard.  I mean, how often do the stories have the great legendary heroes of old working as hired muscle for the local constable or the mayor?

But certainly having them stuck as whatever they happened to be when they mastered their weapon doesn't make much sense.

I think we already talked this out on another thread.  I put that in years ago, when you couldn't do much besides change their weapon prefs from that screen.  You shouldn't be able to change their weapon prefs (I don't know if you can from [m] or not, but you shouldn't be able to).  You should be able to do pretty much anything else with them though.  I don't think there's a problem with them being guards -- certainly being one of the royal guards for the king is permissible.  Royal guards handle tax collection though, so there would need to be further differentiation to avoid some improper acts, assuming they aren't bad heroes.

Hmm.  Will we be able to change dwarves who have mastered a weapon to miners or woodcutters, though (aside from master axedwarves for woodcutters, that is?)  They'd have to switch weapons, which they might object to...

Maybe thery could be willing to switch back to those jobs if they're a master miner/woodcutter in addition to a weaponmaster, though.

And in any case they should probably not let the player assign either of those jobs to them if they're just going to silently not do them without telling the player why...

Or would they be able to carry their mastered weapon in addition to the axe/pickaxe?

i can confirm that you can indeed change weapons of an elite marksman via m-w

but you can't demob him via m-a though (activate)

just in case you are wondering.. the elite marksman is also a legendary miner...

see cheese thread for same save file

---
not exactly sure what happened.. but it seems that he went to a weapon rack.. picked up the "new" weapon in the 2nd hand, then dumped both weapons (along with bolts/quiver.. but that's just because he was a marksman) on floor, before heading to another rack and picked up another of the "new" weapon

old = old weapon choice..
new = new weapon choice..

I could just permit everything and make them vaguely upset if they aren't holding their favorite weapon while soldiering.  This way they could be given a weapon even if their favorite isn't available.
