Oh, crap! Civil war from defaced art! The Sheriff, he do
« on: September 21, 2006, 10:12:00 pm »

Well, at least, it SEEMS like it's turning into a civil war.

1) Miners deface masterpeice.
2) Maker of masterpeice tantrums.
3) Sheriff drags tantrumming dwarf to jail after destroying several things.
4) Sheriff fails to drag the bastard there in time, and gets his leg injured to RED status by tantruming dwarf.
5) Tantrumming dwarf is killed by falling bridge in a "accident" while not tantrummed

6) Miners deface masterpeice again. Different dwarf tantrums, this time in a party.
7) Dwarf tantrums, kills 3 others. Sheriff can't stop murdering spree since he's injured and in bed.
8) Nearby dwarves become pissed, and tantrum. >3 dwarves tantrumming, unknown # more dwarves are "unhappy" or "miserable"

9) Assumably, "Civil war" bug could emerge again if this series of events continues or spreads.

[Well, they didn't civil war, but the fortress did eventually grind to a halt as half or more of the population was unhappy, wounded, caring for said wounded, or tantrumming... Which is about as bad.

Also, the reason why this is in bug reports is that i think it's a bug that a Dwarf which is supposed to be KO'd by the Sheriff can wake up, and injure the Sheriff to such a unhealable state. And that so many crimes can be perpitrated without soldiers intervening, acting as deputies.]

Edited in the reason.

Basically, a dwarf that was supposed to be put into prison revolted, and caused a deadly chain of events by incapacitating the ONLY crime fighter; the sheriff.

[Well, that and that it could revive the "dead" civil war bug. If more people were in the party, the entire fortress could've very well been coated in blood by tantrumming dwarves.]

I can't see a bug here either. As long as the Sheriff is actually called Sheriff, he's supposed to be the lone crime fighter. Soldiers are for soldiering, not for auxiliary police duty. That's what the fortress guard is for, so if you think that a single dwarf police force isn't sufficient for your fortress, try to upgrade the Sheriff to Captain of the Guard as soon as possible.

So?... Just dont let your mines destroy masterpieces!
Dont engrave walls untill you know that they will be in their final state and no more doors are needed.

Is there any way to tell that a particular square of second-level engraving is a masterpiece?  So far I've just been avoiding masterpiece engravings entirely by turning off any dwarf's engraving job as soon as they get close to mastering it...  they just don't sound like they're worth it.  Masterpiece statues and furniture can get turned out much faster and can be moved around at will.

Hmm, perhaps there should be a 'cut engraving' command that has the dwarves carefully cut an engraving out of the wall without damaging it, so it can be either installed elsewhere somehow or used put in storage or whatever.  Having a masterpiece engraving removed like this would probably annoy the creator a little, but wouldn't instantly make them flip out the way smashing it to pieces would.

This could even be the default action when a masterpiece engraving is marked for mining, although of course it would take far, far more time than just mining through normal walls or dirt.

It's on the line between "Annoyance" and "Civil War v2.0"

[Well, that, and i find it very odd that a sheriff would be so badly damaged, or even allow the prisoner-to-be to do so... Hell, i think there's even a chance the Sheriff may have been in the middle of hauling the guy off, and then a "Cancle job: Getting food /drink" occured, which really shouldn't happen. ever.]

I was going to allow adventurers to cut out engravings to bring them to collectors (well, if they are mighty and can carry them or something), but maybe it makes sense for dwarf mode too.  Then you could turn it into a table top and they could spill beer on it.
