Well, a horse is actually really powerful. They could seriously harm a human in real life if they attacked one. Now imagine that human is instead a dwarf, whose head is just high enough so that the horse will kick him right in the face.

Suddenly, horses slaughtering dwarves makes a lot more sense.

And they are definitely slaughtering. I'll be surprised if this fortress sees another spring without me having to reclaim, the threat of a tantrum spiral is looming so close. D: And this fort was looking so beautiful!

Look at the size of that hind leg. At the widest point it's broader than a human torso. It is built to propell that huge piece of mammal at an amazing speed.

also: horses have a really nasty bite. There's a man locally (Järbo, sweden) who died because of a horse bite. Strong farmer man who got drunk and decided to feed the horse some apples or whatever he was up to. The horse smelled the alcohol of the approaching man in pitch black darkness and freaked. Horses HATE alcohol drunks, so he bit his master and ran away to the other side of the pen.
 The man was found as he had bled to death due to a ruptured artery. Also I think his collar bone was broken.. but this is all third-hand information, told by my uncle at one of the grand dinners we throw now and again. My uncle, incidentally, is also a farmer.

In .16 I noticed that a horse gave a GCS a run for its money. The GCS still won, but it ended up with several broken legs.

Build cage traps, catch them, then tame them at a kennel. Never had them attack me, but I'll get a ton of job cancellation spam from them.

The whole knockdown from their charges was enough to automatically win fights vs even well armored dwarves but now that they go straight for the head afterward? Well, I think that charging may need some reworking.
