Vastly Increased Memory Usage?

I've seen people comment on the combat system causing slowdowns, but I'm noticing slowdowns across the board. Even  loading up the embark screen is taking much more memory, cpu power, and virtual memory then I've ever seen DF use on my computer before. The game is almost unplayable except in adventure mode (where the speed problems seem minor, for some reason)

Has anyone noticed anything like this or any such new speed problems?

I have noticed that the game takes up a lot more memory during world creation, and is a lot easier to crash by putting too much stuff in.  I have an experimental mod which adds 100+ new civilizations to the world.  31.16 would handle this fine, although it would crash if I put 600+ new civs in.  31.17 crashes with anything over a small world with my mod in place.  I expect tracking all the night creatures increases the memory use during world creation a lot.
