Anyone else find these bugs annoying?
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:09:16 pm »

First of all the new militery system is a pain, I cant figure it out

Secondly that annoying "Water needed to make farm plots on soil" problem wasnt fixed yet.

What else I find REALLY annoying is how you cant figure the militery system at all.

I wish I had a save of a mature fort, starting out is impossible for me, i NEVER had any forts last over a year, they have no rooms, just one big ass square with beds in it, rooms are hard for me as I get all this stone I cant use, and I cant make a stockpile as if I try and dig out a area for stone I only make more :/

I rather like the military system. But I did start out with it so that could be why. I particularly like the ability for rotating schedules of training and patrol. From what I understand the control over military in 31.xx is much better than in 40d. But I wouldn't really know.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "Water needed to make farm plots on soil" problem. Do you mean underground farms where you need water to plant seeds? Or something else I haven't heard about?

About the stone, you could do a quantum stockpile if you have no qualms with it. Just designate a single tile as a garbage dump with 'i-g' then 'd-b-d' the stone you want cleared. If that feels too exploit-y, use a soil layer for the stockpiles if you have one, or dump the stone into magma.

If you don't mind going through the trouble of an aquifer, they make starting out a lot easier. Dig out the area you wish to farm and then make a screw-pump that pulls from the aquifer. Don't forget to make a hole into the aquifer somewhere in your farm plots to allow the water to drain out though. Getting through the aquifer itself is another matter entirely.

Well, somethings in life are hard,
the military system takes abit to get use to,
but it's worth the additional micromanagement for scheduals, for the extra control
plus to get guys in uniforms nolonger requires the dance of forbidding things and unforbidding other things.

Pretty sure that's not a bug, that's a feature. (someone can look it up in the bug tracker and check though)
apparently underground plants won't grow on soil (except trees), it must be mud.
Makes some sense, they are mushrooms afterall.
Pretty easy to get mud, just bust a whole in a muddy pool (or use a flood gate, if busting an aqiver/river/cavern pond)

EDIT: Did testing, I am wrong.
Clear stockpile area by using dumps.

I made this mistake too, (i used ot look for soil lyers top put stockpiles on)
thing is stockpiles (and funiture, and workshops, and farms) can be built over stone.

It's just he stone will show up on top of them.
the stock piles will still be there (seven though all you see is the bolder tile), anbd will still be filled.
to hide the stone (so you cna see clearly how full the stockpile is)  you can Hide it:
either  d-b-h (to do it as a designation)
or with the k menu. (highlight the stone in question with +/- and press h)

The new military system isn't a bug, it's just complicated.

It might have some bugs within it that contribute to the complicatedness, though. However, I do like the squad schedules so it's easier to cycle my dwarves on and off-duty.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Farms not working without water seems to be an ascended glitch that is being used until the Toad decides to make farming more realistic.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I don't see anything wrong with them.  My military is a well oiled machine.  It feeds the demons regularly and plentifully on time, every time.

I never make stockpiles for stone. I usually just leave it where it is. That is, unless I'm making a stockpile for anything else. Then the stone gets in the way. To deal with this, I use what I believe is called a quantum stockpile (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Create a 1x1 garbage dump zone wherever you want to move all of the stone to. I usually do it just outside of the room I'm trying to clear.

d-b-d and select all of the stone in the room.

Your dorfs will proceed to move all of the stone (and anything else you selected) to that single tile you designated as a dumping site.

Once this is over, remove the dump zone, and d-b-c the tile that you moved all the stone to. Now all that stone is sitting in a single tile, and is available for use by your masons and craftsdwarves.

There are bugs that annoy me, though. For instance, dorfs preferring to stand on the left side of a channel they're digging out, or marksdwarves not picking up bolts. The military system is nigh impenetrable to me beyond the alerts and schedules it comes with, but I've made it work well enough. I do dislike how long it takes to train military dwarves in their weapon skills, though. I locked an axedwarf and a macedwarf in a room filled with ~30 goblins and trolls (stripped, of course) and after the slaughter, they'd each only gained a single skill level. I think fighting armed opponents might train them faster. does anyone know for sure?

Works fine for me. There are few quirks with stuff like boots and gloves, but its easy to figure and there are workarounds. Overall I had no big problems with military at least since 31.07

I vote to make it feature. This game is too easy, and needs more challenges. Seasonal irrigation is good, FUN challenge.

I used to have problems with this too, until I read this.

In fact, the Wiki is my first fallback for anything I don't know how to do.  I learned almost every DF trick I know from this website.  If you're having problems with fortress design, or you can't figure out what to do with all your mined stone, the Wiki has some ideas.  I personally enjoy the dwarven demolition crew because it trains up your siege operators pretty quickly and disposes of unwanted stone and the occasional useless peasant.
