AFAIK, it's all based on weight and maybe contact area (size).  You want something heavy and relatively small.

I imagine material and quality modifiers affect it. I'm no modder/RAW-diver though, so I don't know. Shield bashing is covered by the Misc. Object User skill from what I hear.

See I would like to believe that was true. But I honestly don't think getting caved in the head with a masterwork table, is going to hurt you much more then getting caved in the head with a normal one. Though material makes sense, a wooden table vs say a lead table. I think you might be right about it all though.

This is a platinum warhammer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. it menaces with spikes of platinum.
there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

So mass & weight is pretty much important factors most of the time when using Misc. weaponry but there are exceptions like trap components, most of which are EDGE'd along with it's large sizes making them very effective. Serrated disks (giant shurikens!) & Corkscrews (for drilling holes in Elves) are common favorites.

But there is something very satisfying in beating Ogres with a chair that menaces with spikes or knocking out a Horse with a Pixie or Fairy.
