"I must have rough gems!" - Fey Moods
« on: September 17, 2006, 06:01:00 pm »

Got a wierd situation.  I had a new immigrant suddenly go into a Fey Mood on me unexpectedly.  I quickly had to build a Jeweler's Workshop and he instantly took it over demanding, "I must have rough gems!" and hasn't moved since.

Problem is, I have a stockpile of rough gems sitting right next to him that he seems to be unable to see at all.  Anyone got a clue as to why this might be?

He wants another kind of gem.. check his profile to see if he likes something special and start digging fast (or just lock him and get the burial site ready)

According to others here, raw glass is also considered as a rough gem.

This is true but if it's happening in a jewelry shop there's at least a very high probability that he really wants gems and not raw glass.

Raw glass can even be cut like gems.  You should try making some raw glass of each type...  having it around is good for moods, anyway.  Ditto for extra bags of sand and blocks of each glass type.

I just had a little bastard insist on glass.  The last workshop I built for him was the furnace (I didn't want to waste a steel building him a magma furnace, but, oh well), then I dug and dug and dug until I had procured everything but the colored diamonds.  After that I read some posts saying "rough gems" can be glass and built another furnace, but only managed to produce 1 green glass before he flipped out.

Producing glass is pretty wacky.  Getting real gems just requires a bit of digging and one workshop to cut them.  Crystal glass requires producing sand, ash, lye, potash, pearlash, rock crystal, an ashery; a kiln, a magma glass furnace (or else a wood or metal furnace + a glass furnace + coal or charcoal), plus barrels, buckets, bags and lots and lots of lead time and a surplus of haulers before all those tasks can bubble their way through the job queue.

Talk about your anti-climax.  For all that trouble, they ought to be churning out 50" plasma TVs.   :D

Well, realistically the effort of producing glass in a pre-industrial society does limit its practical uses.

There are a few nice things about it, though...  Green glass, at least, can be easily produced at any time once you have a lava glass furnace, the only sticking being the difficulty of dragging sand from the river to the lava.  Could you set up a channel system to produce sand near the lava?  In any case, that will be solved once we can channel lava to make a lava glassmaker near the river.

You can use green glass to produce just about anything you can make with stone, plus a few other things so a legendary glassworker would be nice to have for that purpose.  And you can make crafts, too, all using the same skill and no resources of any importance.  Currently you can make green glass bolts from the manager, though I don't know if that's a bug.  It's more reliable than making bone ones and uses a less important resource than wooden ones, anyway.

And green or clear glass lets you do gem-related things without using gems, which are limited in supply.
