Questcrafted: A possible succession fortress
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:53:09 pm »

So I finally updated to DF 2010. In my first useful spot I foolishly tunnelled depp into the mountainside. Then I hit my first cavern. I was so excited. Then the troglodytes arrived. They killed half my population. Also kobold theives and a tantruming woodcutter (The former expedition leader who broke under the strain.) took out 4 others. I have 9 live dwarves and about 10 corpses. It the stroke of spring i saved the game. If you want to have a succession fort with this i think it would be fun. I have flux, caverns, I believe all civs and plenty of trees.

Please tell me if you are interested!

I'm good with building secure and efficient forts... though it might be TOO secure, and thus not dwarfy enough.  If we want a well run fort I could do it... but we probably want a more dwarfy story of burning elves and goblin heads on pikes and magma floods and demon invasions and gremlins pulling self destruct switches and giant statues of kings and forests of spikes and booze bombs and everlasting fire traps and cave ins and elephants and alcohol dependency and clothes made of cat skin and... and... dwarves letting elves live..ugh.

It's only been one year and my expedition leader chopped four dwarfs to death in a fit of rage and then went insane. isn't that dwarfy enough? I believe goblins are present. Also I murdered the entire first dwarven caravan because I had no trade goods.

This is beginning to sound TOO dwarfy.  Dwarves killing other dwarves is all well and good, I mean once a dwarf broke out of prison and stabbed the guy bringing him water with an artifact necklace, but too many dying this early in might cause problems.  Especially with the fact that all these deaths will earn your fortress a reputation as a deathtrap and stymie immigration.  I would recommend trying to build a fountain or something to take advantage of the happiness bonus from mist, cause it sounds to me like you have a very delicate happiness balance.  Make sure you can lock dwarves in with doors when necessary too.  I like to build cage traps at random spots in hallways to capture any troublemakers, afterwards you can just dump them into the cavern to be geonauts until they either die of hunger or a giant cave spider finds them and covers them in precious, precious silk.  It's a good idea to do that with invader prisoners too, after stripping them of equipment, of course.

If you somehow manage to survive all this until your next immigration, I will be very interested.

Oh, sorry, distracted by succession forts. Also, enjoying a decent fort in 40d I don't want to leave yet. I'll PM you when I get back to it.
